10/6/14 MMM

Yea!! I finally got my 3rd day reflection done after 3 weeks! If you have the time to read it, please do on my personal blog.  My post is something I hope everyone will be thinking of as it will be the focus of our time together during professional development on October 20th.  I am uber (Is that a word?) excited about it and I hope all of you will be too.  It won't be as fun as our Amazing Race (Sorry.  I'm only good for one of those a year.), but it is something we definitely need to come together on.  If you are worried it will take away from team time or work in your rooms, I believe if done right, it will enhance that time.
To Be Aware of
  • In computers this week, Emma will be talking about Internet etiquette this week. She's going to talk about basic Internet etiquette with K-2 students and focus more on social networking etiquette with 3-6 students. This will also be my last lesson in her digital citizenship unit, unless there is something else anyone want her to teach about.
  • I just received information on the evaluation schedule for each of you.  I will be letting you know which evaluation you will be doing this year very soon.  Also, since there is a new evaluation system, I have created a new blog devoted to training on each of the standards.  I will update it every month to match the schedule of each standard I will be evaluating you on.  I hope it will be helpful to you.  On top of that, I will be holding a non-required training each month on these standards.  The first training will be held after school on Tuesday this week from 3:45-4:15.  I want to make sure you are all aware of what you will be evaluated on and how it will be done.  I feel like the blog and these training sessions will help with that
  • If you haven't signed up for @remind, please sign up for both your grade level and faculty.  If you have misplaced the instruction sheets, let me know.  Here is the phone number and code for the faculty reminder:

  • Tuesdays are my #NoOfficeDays.  I will make every effort to stay out of my office so I can spend some good time out in your classrooms and with the kids.  This week, I may be going on the field trip with the 5th grade.  If I do, my "NoOfficeDay" will be on Wednesday.
  • As if you aren't aware, this week is Parent/Teacher conferences.  PTA will be providing the meals so please make sure you let them know how much we appreciate the support they give us with these meals.
  • A reminder on the appropriate assigning of homework.  I believe most everyone does a great job on the time and value of the homework you give your students, but this is just a heads up to consider carefully the homework you assign.  Please consider the following:
    • 10 minutes for every grade. (Example. 3rd grade 3x10=30 minutes of homework)  This does not include home reading.  Home reading is in addition to this time.
    • Consider if the the homework has value or if it is just busy work.  Parents hate busy work.  You may consider such things as word scrambles, crosswords, etc as work kids can do just for fun with their parents, as extra credit, or a small treat upon completion.
    • Be flexible on when some homework is due in order to give parents time to work on it with their child.  Instead of making an assignment due the next day, make it due in two days.  This may free up some time for you too!  This doesn't mean every assignment, but you should consider other assignments besides home reading and spelling.
    • Consider breaking up big homework assignments and projects into parts so that it doesn't seem overwhelming to the parents and children, but give due dates for the parts to keep your students on schedule.  I would also check up with the students on those due dates to keep them accountable.
    • Consider the workload of homework from more than one subject per night.  This may be a bit much for many of your students, but okay for others.
    • Consider the background of each of your students.  Some dynamics make it hard for some to complete homework.  Differentiate as best as you can.

  • Any students we need to celebrate?  I would like to get Friday Fone Calls home going again and celebrate student accomplishments on here as well.
  • Thank you PTA for putting together an amazing Carnival!  Great job to the teachers who ran the booths!  We had an amazing turnout!
  • Above all, Thanks to Steve and Cody for the AMAZING job they do!  Especially for staying so late after the carnival so we could come to a clean school on Tuesday.  REMEMBER to thank them if you haven't!
Great Cartoon of the Week
Old, but funny and a good message.

Challenge of the Week
I want everyone to do this!!  If someone where to ask you, "Tell me about Grovecrest Elementary," or "Why should I have confidence in Grovecrest/Alpine School District," what would you say?  This actually happened to me on Friday morning at a meeting I was at.  A BYU professor who has his kids going to a charter school asked me that.  He is considering putting his kids back in public school and he lives in Pleasant Grove.   What would you say if you were asked that?  Come up with an 30 second elevator speech on why Grovecrest is so impressive.  Post it at the bottom of this blog as a comment.  I want everyone to share and read the comments.  There is a reason for this and you will all find out on Wednesday morning.
Have a Great Week

  1. I would talk about all the great extracurricular things Grovecrest has to offer. I think we have an awesome variety of ballroom, choir, sports, and even Lego club sometimes.

  2. I get asked this quite a bit actually since I live in Pleasant Grove. I always say that Grovecrest has the best faculty there is. I also say that we have such supportive parents and students that really want to learn. We live in an area that has just regular great families that love to learn. I think the best reason why Grovecrest is the best is that I bring my own children to go to this school. To me, that says it all! :-)

  3. Everyone asks me why I drive from Holladay to PG every day. There are several reasons why: I have never known such dedicated, hard-working teachers who truly care about their students and their achievement. Also, the families that attend are school are so supportive. I also love the extracurricular activities and programs that our school offers for students of all ages.

  4. Grovecrest has a warm and positive spirit. Our faculty supports each other and we treat each other like family. We care about our students and they can feel that and respond to it. We have great programs in addition to our regular school day curriculum and we are always striving for excellence. We have very supportive parents and our PTA is the best there is! Parents, teachers, students and administration all work together to make Grovecrest the best elementary school in the district.

  5. Grovecrest is a wonderful school where the Educators, Students and Parents work together to help students become life long learners. The Educators go the extra mile to help encourage and challenge students in their progress. The Students learn and practice, not only the core curriculum subjects, but also character skills that will help them throughout their lifetime. The Parents support and provide extra volunteer time that directly impacts the school community. There are a variety of before and after school activities offered to help enrich students educational experience. When you enter Grovecrest there is a feeling of safety and comfort that invites you to be a part the educational environment. I love working at Grovecrest and count myself lucky that this is where I get to come everyday and practice my profession.

  6. Kindergarten's "Elevator Speech":

Grovecrest is an amazing school for many reasons! We have so many supportive and involved families, an incredible PTA, and an understanding and helpful administration. We have TONS of extracurricular activities: ballroom, chorus, after school classes taught by teachers, golf, and Girls on the Run. Our teachers collaborate each week to support each other and make sure we are doing everything we can for our students. Our school also meets our kids needs through FLEX time.
