4/27/15 MMM

Wow! The year is going by so quickly.  This weekend was cold, but it didn't stop my family from building a garden in our backyard.  The yard is actually more inviting to be in now.  Check it out.

I am leaving the padlet up with our Genius Hour discussion since we didn't have any discussion on it. Please share your concerns, thoughts, ideas, and solutions via this Padlet so we can go forward with this with both eyes wide open.  Here is the Google Doc link too.  I  would like to talk about this again with the possibility of implementing OUR OWN version of it starting next year.

#Utedchat this Wednesday from 9-10.  The topic is Augmented Reality in Education.

**To Be Aware of**
  • SAGE Testing will be going on for the next several weeks.  Please be quiet in the halls and those who are administering, remember ethics.  Take stuff off the walls or cover up.  We don't want to take any chances.
  • We will have an intruder drill sometime this week.  Like the earthquake drill, be ready for the unexpected.
  • Don't forget to attach #teamkid on all tweets going out.  Our school hashtag is #PawPower.
  •  Next Monday you should be working on class lists for next year.  Don't forget to look at the Blue cards so we don't make any mistakes of which kids should not be with each other.
  • New book I will be reading to classes is Horton Hatches the Egg.  The topic of discussion is responsibility.  Look at the calendar to sign up for a time.
  • I still have those book catalogs in my office that were used about a month ago by a vendor to help with our guided reading library.  You will need to decide on books you would like to order.  I would like to finalize by the end of this week.
  • A financial advisor by the name of Dan Matheson will be here on Wednesday during lunch to talk about managing investments.  He is providing lunch (sandwiches I think).  I have been working with him for the last few years.  He has been great for me and my family. You may not be interested, but let's not give him the cold shoulder.  Let's be courteous of his time.

4/20/2015 MMM

I hope your weekend was wonderful.  I ended up working in my backyard.  We are putting in a new garden and even though it isn't quite finished, it is already making our yard look a ton better.  I also went country dancing with my wife, one of our favorite things to do that we seldom get to do.  One problem, we went to a dance club in Provo and we were the oldest ones there by at least 15 years.  We had fun, but definitely felt a little out of place.

The Running with the Grizzlies Fun Run and 5K was a big success from my point of view.  There were nearly 400 participants.  If you see Katie Huddleston or any other PTA people, please thank them and congratulate them for a great event.  We really do have a great PTA who supports us so well.  I mentioned I went country dancing Saturday.  I also ran the 5K on Friday and ran up a down escalator at the CITES conference (Rashel, it isn't cheating. Anyway to get to the top!) on Thursday.  Needless to say, my legs are feeling it.

The #Utedchat this week is on Wednesday night the 22nd from 9-10.  The topic this week is Teaching Soft Skills with Jared Covili from UEN as moderator. Jared is quite the expert so if you have the chance, it should be a great discussion.

Last week's faculty mtg with a focus on Genius Hour created a lot of concern and questions.  I remember the concerns that were voiced, but I know there are a lot of other questions and ideas we didn't hear.  Please share your concerns, thoughts, ideas, and solutions via this Padlet so we can go forward with this with both eyes wide open.  I have created a Google Doc on Genius Hour with links to more information based on what I heard.  I will continue to add to it for your convenience.  I've already emailed you all a link to this document, but here is another link just in case that email got deleted or buried.  I  would like to talk about this again with the possibility of implementing OUR OWN version of it starting next year.

**To Be Aware of**
  • We will have a fire drill sometime this week.  Like the earthquake drill, be ready for the unexpected.
  • Don't forget to attach #teamkid on all tweets going out.  Our school hashtag is #PawPower.

  • The deadline to look through and move all supplies out of the supply room downstairs was last Friday.  Books and items that needed to go to surplus should have been put out on tables.  Anything else should have been taken to your
  •  Concerning class placements for next year, you will need to get the blue folders out and look at who shouldn't be together.  There are some cases where kids were put together who were not supposed to be together, but nobody looked at the cards.  (Start using these folders from the beginning of the year, not the end.) You should have DRA levels on hand when we place.  We will do away with the average rating method and just go on having a near even number of 1s, 2s, 3s and 4s across the classes. Since we started averaging, our classes have been incredibly lopsided.
  • New book I will be reading to classes is Horton Hatches the Egg.  The topic of discussion is responsibility.  Look at the calendar to sign up for a time.
  • The superintendent and three board members will be at our school tomorrow morning from about 8-10.  They will be working in the conference room during that time and should not be disturbed.  This is another reason to get the grade level printers out of that room TODAY!
  • I still have those book catalogs in my office that were used about a month ago by a vendor to help with our guided reading library.  You will need to decide on books you would like to order.  I would like to finalize by the end of this week.

Celebrations/Things I Noticed
Gotta give a shout out to the PTA, especially Katie Huddleston for making the Running With the Grizzlies Festivities happen the way they did.  It was a great event and the weather cooperated with us up until it was about time to go.  The wind picked up then and it got a bit chilly (especially when covered in whipped cream)
Last week I was able to visit a few classes and I noticed some great things.
Angie Herman was working at her horseshoe table with a few of her students helping them complete some assignments.  A great thing to do while the kids are working on other projects.  During that time, one of her kids came to me and was telling me all about what he was learning about an animal he was studying about.  I could tell he was loving what he was learning.
I was able to play soccer with Elly's kids at recess.  It was great fun to hang out with the kindergarteners for 10 minutes.

4/13/15 MMM

I hope everyone's break was wonderful.  I had a great time with my family.  You all saw my red face at the assembly this morning.  I was in the sun whether working or playing the whole week.  Glad to be back and working with all of you.

The #Utedchat this week is on Wednesday night the 15th (Taxes Due) from 9-10.  The topic this week is The Trouble with Teenagers: Safe Social Media Tips for Students.

We have received training on iReady and Edivate.  How are you using them?  What are some of your frustrations?  Please comment on the following Padlet.

**To Be Aware of**
  • Faculty meeting is this Wednesday at 8:15.  We need to start right at 8:15 in order to take care of everything.  For the training part of faculty meeting, will you please watch this video?  It is something I've included before in a MMM, but it is something I want us all to consider for next year and I think this would be a great discussion to have on Wednesday.  The video will be included in the video of the week as well.
  • Don't forget to attach #teamkid on all tweets going out.  Our school hashtag is #PawPower.
  • Please let me know what room you have decided to put the grade level printer in.  This was supposed to be done before the break.  I will get John to make sure everything is configured correctly.
  • As a team, you will need to go down to storage and pull out all you would like to keep through construction.  These supplies will need to be stored in your rooms.  There is a sign off sheet in the office so we know EACH of you have removed all that you want.  Anything you do not want needs to be put out on the tables in the multipurpose room to be cataloged for surplus by April the 17th. Everything else will be trashed.
  • It was awesome to read to many of your classes.  We had some amazing discussions and chances to use social media in some classes to continue the dialogue.  In other classes we talked about making the most of your space in telling your story using a small Post-It note.  In a way I was trying to teach the kids about digital citizenship and how I use Twitter to tell Grovecrest's story.  I said I would put these little notes up on Twitter and I will.  It will just take a bit with reports due this week.

3/30/15 MMM

I'm sorry folks I didn't get a memo out last week.  It has been a hectic couple of weeks and this week will not be any different.  You know how I talked about the importance of sleep two weeks ago? Well, last weekend I didn't follow it at all.  Check out what I did all weekend and into the night.

Yep.  I dug a couple of big holes for the house we are renovating.  One for a new sewage line and the other for a basement entrance since we will be making the house into a duplex.  It's a lot of fun playing.  This week I didn't do much better.

No #Utedchat this week due to the UCET conference on Thursday and Friday.  Zack and I are the only ones going to this conference.  I was able to take a group last year.  This year we won't be able to, but Zack and I are presenting so wish us luck.  Hopefully we will be able to take a group next year.  It is a great conference and it doesn't cost a whole lot.

I've heard a little about the DOK/SLO training and planning day last week.  I would like to learn more from you.  I will come by today and learn from you in your PLCs.

**To Be Aware of**
  • Don't forget to attach #teamkid on all tweets going out.  Our school hashtag is #PawPower.
  • Please decide as a team which team member's room you would like to put the grade level printer to be put in.  They need to be moved this week to accommodate movement of items being affected by the rebuild.
  • As a team, you will need to go down to storage and pull out all you would like to keep through construction.  These supplies will need to be stored in your rooms.  There is a sign off sheet in the office so we know EACH of you have removed all that you want.  Anything left after April the 17th will go to surplus or be trashed.
  • **Summer Collaboration Grant Applications are due to me by Tuesday.  They should be very easy to fill out.  They look exactly like the Incentive presentation forms you filled out for the presentations last Monday.  The CTLs each have a copy of the application.**
  • School Improvement plan and Trustland report is due on Wednesday.  I will complete the SIP by today and will email a copy of it to all of you so you know where our Trustland money is going to and what goals we will be funding.  If you have questions, please talk to me.  The plan was approved by the SCC.  I just have to put it on the State/District Form.

We are excited about our interns for next year.  Their names are Tess McCleskey and Carolyn Fisher.  Tess is currently with Lisa Schafer doing her practicum.  Both were very high on Zack and my list.  We feel lucky to have them.
District Battle of the Books happened at Grovecrest on Saturday.  Our Odd-O-Bots did very well and placed 13th out of 36 teams with 399 points.  They did fantastic.  Please congratulate them on a job well done. Cheryl did an amazing job organizing, decorating, and accommodating so many people.  The reading committee also did a fabulous job preparing the school for it.  Thanks to all of you for allowing us to use your rooms on Saturday.

MMM 3/16/2015

I learned some stuff about the importance of sleep this weekend.  Call me slow, but I'm sure most if not all of you already know how important it is to get 8 hours of sleep every night.  The information I learned was that the first six hours of sleep is important for physical recovery.  Hours 7-8 are important for mental rejuvenation.  I think last night was the first night in a long time that I got 8 hours of sleep.  Feels good.

A reminder for those who are interested in the #Utedchat taking place Wednesday night from 9-10. This week's topic is "Collaborating with the World".  Mostly teachers are involved in this chat from all around the state.  There are some from our district that are great to listen to.

I would love your feedback on last week's faculty meeting about teenage suicide.  I have another great video to watch that is quite motivating.  It will be the new Video of the Week

To Be Aware of
  • DOK/SLO training has switch to Tuesday the 24th due to a conflict with the District Curriculum trainers.  This is new information to me as well.  They told me they needed to switch dates just last week.  Sheila is aware of the change and is ready to arrange subs just like you did for the DRA and the old date for DOK/SLO training.  Keep the subs for the 27th as it is a day provided by the district for teams to collaborate on the new training.
  • There will be an Earthquake drill sometime this week.  Be ready for some obstacles.  Gotta be ready for the unexpected.
  • Don't forget to attach #teamkid on all tweets going out.  Our school hashtag is #PawPower.
  • The Music and Art Extravaganza is this today from 5:30-7:30.  Come if you can.  I'll be performing if you want to come and embarrass me.
  • Collaboration Incentive presentations are next Monday the 23rd starting at 2:30.  Sign up here.
  • Mr. Hoopes reading times are available on the school google calendar marked "Kyle Read".  Sign up for a time and then email me with the time or put it in the notes like Zack has set up for extra P.E. and Computer time.  Please make sure you put your name before the Kyle Read so it shows up on my calendar that I'm reading for you.  Otherwise I just see Kyle Read.

Celebrations/Things I Noticed

  • Congrats to our Ballroom teams this weekend at the BYU National Competition! Level 1 took 1st overall and level 2 took 3rd place overall!  Come see the huge trophy in the office!
  • I've noticed more this year than last the work our student teachers and practicum teachers are doing.  Thanks to those who are housing and helping them to become successful teachers.  You make a difference.
Great Video clip of the Week
Video of the week is a video about what kids need to hear.

Great Read of the Week
A great read from Eric Sheninger.

Engagement Does Not Always Equate to Learning

3/2/15 MMM

HAPPY DR. SEUSS DAY!!  Thanks for getting grades posted on time.  It was a fun weekend for me.  I went winter camping with my son for scouts.  I slept warm as long as I didn't move.
A reminder for those who are interested in the #Utedchat taking place Wednesday night from 9-10.  This week's topic is "Teachers Make the Worst Students".  I need to tell you again, it is quite fun to do this and loads of information comes at you from other teachers.  I think there is only one other principal who gets involved with these chats so you are actually tweeting with other teachers.
I will be coming around today to those who were on evaluation this year to have you sign the final form.  It looks like the SET form you had to sign on one side and initial on the other.
Try to stay out of the rain.  Bundle up and keep warm.
New Padlet discussion for this week, but you will need to read this article before commenting.  It is a short article.  Please read it and then answer the question on the padlet discussion.  It has to do with failure.

To Be Aware of
  • Flu season is not over.  Please take care of yourselves.
  • The people at Edivation (Soon to be Edivate) will be coming at 10:30 on Monday.  Samantha from our district will be presenting to us at 8:30.  Our PD day is full.  We are excited to hear from both presentations.  Remember, lunch is on me (not literally).
  • Battle of the Books are all this week.  Please be accommodating and understanding of those who are helping with the battles.  It is a great activity to allow your kids to watch a battle sometime during the week.
  • Don't forget to attach #teamkid on all tweets going out.  Our school hashtag is #PawPower.
  • We will not have a faculty meeting on Wednesday the 11th because of Monday PD day.

Celebrations/Things I Noticed
If any of you notice great things some of your teammates are doing, please share by commenting below or telling me so I can include it in future MMMs.
  • Rachel had a GHO (Google Hang Out) with a 4th grade class in St. George on Friday.  The kids taught them all about minerals.  They also learned about the different levels of soil from them.  It was amazing.  If any of you would like to try something like that with your class, let me know.  I have contacts all over the state and nation that would probably love to do something like that.  One of the great benefits of being apart of the common core, connections nationwide.
  • Congratulations to all those who participated in the Storytelling festival.  We heard some great stories in the assemblies, but I know you all heard a lot more awesome stories in your class competitions.
  • We raised a lot of money for the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society Fundraiser.  Thank the kids for me for taking part in the "Stuck for a Buck" event.  That was pretty fun....until the end when I was overheating and the tape was choking me a little from sliding down the wall.  All in all, it was a good time for me.
  • Congratulations to Meredith Durrant for a quick transition from student teacher to full time intern in Amanda's old room.  It is now Mrs. Durrant's room. She is doing fantastic.
Great Video clip of the Week
In honor of one of our storytelling winners.  It's not great quality, but funny just the same.  Again, great job to all the storytellers.

Great Read of the Week
This great read will go with the padlet discussion.  It has to do with peoples' perception of failure.  It is a very interesting read.  Great Pic to go along with the discussion.
