MMM 8/24/2015

Hey folks,
The first week was awesome!  I really appreciate those who participated in the Blue Carpet event.  Parents were very impressed and enjoyed that morning event.  I have heard from some parents that said they felt bad they missed it.  I know it was a bit chaotic, but we will make plans to make it better for next year and we will advertise it better as well.
This is our first PLC Monday of the year and I hope all will set aside time to look at Edivate today.  Some teams have talked to me and said that it was in their plans.  I wanted to share one of the video clips I have watched.  It has to do with STEM.  Here is a link.  Let me know what you think.  It will also be in the video of the week section of this MMM.

To Be Aware Of
This Thursday will be our Back to School night from 5-7.  Please publicize this with your kids and parents.  We will be sending home a note, putting it on Facebook, Twitter, Remind, School Messenger, and the website.  However, your help in getting the word out by your means will be helpful.  Just so you know, this Back to School night will be a lot more interactive for parents in the big parent meeting.  There will still be the PTA budget part of it that All parents LOVE to attend, but there will be an exercise I will put parents through as well.  This is why we need more parents there than we usually have and this is why I need your help in getting the word out.
The Grovecrest Faculty Passion Project google classroom page is open and you all have been invited.  Here is a link to the page.
The Monday Assemblies Zack and I will be doing are going to be every 4th Monday, or the last school Monday of the month starting in September.  We will call them Edivate Assemblies since you will be working on Edivate during those times.
The first faculty Mtg that will be devoted to your passion projects will be in September.  This may change, but there will be 4 of our faculty meetings devoted to that.
Our PD day in October will be in an edcamp format.  Information about this will come to you throughout the coming weeks in preparation.
Zack and I will be scheduling Oliver Button readings soon.  Monthly Kyle reads will be scheduled each month as well.
I will let you know the evaluation schedule when I get it.

Celebrations
I was able to make it to every class every day last week either through rules rotation or a quick visit.  That is my goal this year and I hope to make it.
Heather Connell was having her kids do idea maps for autobiographies on just the third day!  Can you believe that? 2nd graders doing idea maps and not even a week in.  Awesome!!
Tess McClesky put her students through the Mindset Questionnaire found on page 12 of the book.  She said it was a great discussion.  I know because my daughter who is in her class was talking about it at home.  Great thinking to do that with your students.

First Week 2015 MMM 8/19/2015

Hey folks,
This first one is not going to be real fancy.  I let the cat out of the bag in our training this morning and said something about staying up late.  Well, guess what. I'm up late again, but I promised to get this to you so I'm going to.  The biggest reason for this is to get the lunch schedule out to everyone.
The training yesterday with iReady I hope was beneficial.  I know some of us don't have as ready access to devices to do the activities.  This is why it is very important to plan open computer lab times for your classes.  Get on the schedule so we don't double book those times.
I'm also excited to start sharing with each other the Mindset Challenge from before the iReady training.  Remember, I want all of us to try something new this year that would make our school better.  This could be something you try on your own, with a partner, or as a team.  It doesn't have to be a save the world type project.  Just something new you want to try that you are passionate about.  I've provided a place for all of us to reflect together in a new google classroom.  I invited all of you to join it.  I chose google classroom to learn more about it and to show all of you another option for your own classroom.  I really do want us all to share and reflect with each other, but if public reflection is not something you want to do, I would encourage you to reflect in some way for yourself.  I like to write because it makes my reflections more permanent.  I also like to publicize my reflections for two big reasons: I want to be an example to our students in publishing work to a broader audience and I get suggestions/comments from others that help me grow.  You decide what you want to do, but please try something new and please reflect.

To Be Aware Of
As mentioned above, the Grovecrest Faculty Passion Project google classroom page is open and you all have been invited.  Here is a link to the page.

5/11/15 MMM

I hope everyone enjoyed the weekend.  I know it is a day late, but Happy Woman's Day to all of the women here who make a difference.
Things are really starting to ramp up in preparation for the end of the year.  Please keep on your toes.  Keep  in mind the important dates including SAGE Testing and End of Year events for each grade level.  We don't want to step on any toes.  I hope everyone remembered DRA was supposed to be input into Skyward by last Friday.  Sometimes they leave Skyward open a little longer.  If you haven't input, get it done TODAY.  Hopefully it is still open.
I haven't heard anything more about our rebuild.  As I get information, I will pass it on to all of you.
There have been some great things happening at Grovecrest throughout the year.  Please share some great things that you have noticed in your class, on your team, and/or in general via this padlet.  I had this up last week, but since I didn't have the MMM out till later in the week, I'll leave it up and available to you.

Thank you to those who got your classes involved in the Hanging with Hoopes blog post via our school website.  It has been very interesting to see what kids are curious about.  I think this will help you see how Genius Hour could be a very beneficial thing to our students.  Here is a link to the student responses.

**To Be Aware of**
  • SAGE Testing will end next Thursday the 21st..  Please be quiet in the halls and those who are administering, remember ethics.  Take stuff off the walls or cover up.  We don't want to take any chances.

  • The last day of school time for kids is 9:05-10:35.  Faculty Social will start after that.

4/27/15 MMM

Wow! The year is going by so quickly.  This weekend was cold, but it didn't stop my family from building a garden in our backyard.  The yard is actually more inviting to be in now.  Check it out.

I am leaving the padlet up with our Genius Hour discussion since we didn't have any discussion on it. Please share your concerns, thoughts, ideas, and solutions via this Padlet so we can go forward with this with both eyes wide open.  Here is the Google Doc link too.  I  would like to talk about this again with the possibility of implementing OUR OWN version of it starting next year.

#Utedchat this Wednesday from 9-10.  The topic is Augmented Reality in Education.

  • Don't forget to attach #teamkid on all tweets going out.  Our school hashtag is #PawPower.
  •  Next Monday you should be working on class lists for next year.  Don't forget to look at the Blue cards so we don't make any mistakes of which kids should not be with each other.
  • New book I will be reading to classes is Horton Hatches the Egg.  The topic of discussion is responsibility.  Look at the calendar to sign up for a time.

  • A financial advisor by the name of Dan Matheson will be here on Wednesday during lunch to talk about managing investments.  He is providing lunch (sandwiches I think).  I have been working with him for the last few years.  He has been great for me and my family. You may not be interested, but let's not give him the cold shoulder.  Let's be courteous of his time.

4/20/2015 MMM

I hope your weekend was wonderful.  I ended up working in my backyard.  We are putting in a new garden and even though it isn't quite finished, it is already making our yard look a ton better.  I also went country dancing with my wife, one of our favorite things to do that we seldom get to do.  One problem, we went to a dance club in Provo and we were the oldest ones there by at least 15 years.  We had fun, but definitely felt a little out of place.

The Running with the Grizzlies Fun Run and 5K was a big success from my point of view.  There were nearly 400 participants.  If you see Katie Huddleston or any other PTA people, please thank them and congratulate them for a great event.  We really do have a great PTA who supports us so well.  I mentioned I went country dancing Saturday.  I also ran the 5K on Friday and ran up a down escalator at the CITES conference (Rashel, it isn't cheating. Anyway to get to the top!) on Thursday.  Needless to say, my legs are feeling it.

The #Utedchat this week is on Wednesday night the 22nd from 9-10.  The topic this week is Teaching Soft Skills with Jared Covili from UEN as moderator. Jared is quite the expert so if you have the chance, it should be a great discussion.

Last week's faculty mtg with a focus on Genius Hour created a lot of concern and questions.  I remember the concerns that were voiced, but I know there are a lot of other questions and ideas we didn't hear.  Please share your concerns, thoughts, ideas, and solutions via this Padlet so we can go forward with this with both eyes wide open.  I have created a Google Doc on Genius Hour with links to more information based on what I heard.  I will continue to add to it for your convenience.  I've already emailed you all a link to this document, but here is another link just in case that email got deleted or buried.  I  would like to talk about this again with the possibility of implementing OUR OWN version of it starting next year.

**To Be Aware of**
  • We will have a fire drill sometime this week.  Like the earthquake drill, be ready for the unexpected.
  • Don't forget to attach #teamkid on all tweets going out.  Our school hashtag is #PawPower.
  • Thank you for those who have already moved the grade level printers to your new location.  There are still some that need to be moved.  Please take care of that early this week.  Today would be a wonderful time to do it. (HINT)
  • The deadline to look through and move all supplies out of the supply room downstairs was last Friday.  Books and items that needed to go to surplus should have been put out on tables.  Anything else should have been taken to your
  •  Concerning class placements for next year, you will need to get the blue folders out and look at who shouldn't be together.  There are some cases where kids were put together who were not supposed to be together, but nobody looked at the cards.  (Start using these folders from the beginning of the year, not the end.) You should have DRA levels on hand when we place.  We will do away with the average rating method and just go on having a near even number of 1s, 2s, 3s and 4s across the classes. Since we started averaging, our classes have been incredibly lopsided.
  • New book I will be reading to classes is Horton Hatches the Egg.  The topic of discussion is responsibility.  Look at the calendar to sign up for a time.
  • The superintendent and three board members will be at our school tomorrow morning from about 8-10.  They will be working in the conference room during that time and should not be disturbed.  This is another reason to get the grade level printers out of that room TODAY!
  • I still have those book catalogs in my office that were used about a month ago by a vendor to help with our guided reading library.  You will need to decide on books you would like to order.  I would like to finalize by the end of this week.

Celebrations/Things I Noticed
Gotta give a shout out to the PTA, especially Katie Huddleston for making the Running With the Grizzlies Festivities happen the way they did.  It was a great event and the weather cooperated with us up until it was about time to go.  The wind picked up then and it got a bit chilly (especially when covered in whipped cream)
Last week I was able to visit a few classes and I noticed some great things.
Angie Herman was working at her horseshoe table with a few of her students helping them complete some assignments.  A great thing to do while the kids are working on other projects.  During that time, one of her kids came to me and was telling me all about what he was learning about an animal he was studying about.  I could tell he was loving what he was learning.
I was able to play soccer with Elly's kids at recess.  It was great fun to hang out with the kindergarteners for 10 minutes.

Great Video clip of the Week

4/13/15 MMM

I hope everyone's break was wonderful.  I had a great time with my family.  You all saw my red face at the assembly this morning.  I was in the sun whether working or playing the whole week.  Glad to be back and working with all of you.

The #Utedchat this week is on Wednesday night the 15th (Taxes Due) from 9-10.  The topic this week is The Trouble with Teenagers: Safe Social Media Tips for Students.

We have received training on iReady and Edivate.  How are you using them?  What are some of your frustrations?  Please comment on the following Padlet.

**To Be Aware of**
  • Faculty meeting is this Wednesday at 8:15.  We need to start right at 8:15 in order to take care of everything.  For the training part of faculty meeting, will you please watch this video?  It is something I've included before in a MMM, but it is something I want us all to consider for next year and I think this would be a great discussion to have on Wednesday.  The video will be included in the video of the week as well.
  • Don't forget to attach #teamkid on all tweets going out.  Our school hashtag is #PawPower.
  • Please let me know what room you have decided to put the grade level printer in.  This was supposed to be done before the break.  I will get John to make sure everything is configured correctly.
  • As a team, you will need to go down to storage and pull out all you would like to keep through construction.  These supplies will need to be stored in your rooms.  There is a sign off sheet in the office so we know EACH of you have removed all that you want.  Anything you do not want needs to be put out on the tables in the multipurpose room to be cataloged for surplus by April the 17th. Everything else will be trashed.
  • It was awesome to read to many of your classes.  We had some amazing discussions and chances to use social media in some classes to continue the dialogue.  In other classes we talked about making the most of your space in telling your story using a small Post-It note.  In a way I was trying to teach the kids about digital citizenship and how I use Twitter to tell Grovecrest's story.  I said I would put these little notes up on Twitter and I will.  It will just take a bit with reports due this week.
